It’s weird times, Bob.
I found my FAVORITE artist touted around the internet as dressing in drag to make a point about Florida’s “drag ban.”
It wasn’t. He wasn’t. He’s been doing costumed performances for decades. If you have ever seen TOOL, A Perfect Circle, or Puscifer you would understand that Maynard is very esoteric and that’s we love- his art.
He’s weird.
I don’t want to be the moral arbiter to curb the weird. I want people to push boundaries so that, as a society, we can cull the bad ideas and hone the good ones. I don’t want the only freedom to be my idea of freedom. I think that, on some level, we need people who are willing to make us a bit uncomfortable so that we can grow.
But where is the line?
Do I want to ban all drag performances and all gay people from ever existing? No. They should, however, keep their ideologies away from the kids. I think kids should not be allowed to participate in drag shows, and that the adults involved should be harshly reprimanded and their computers checked. I think KIDS should never be allowed to “transition” and I think adults should have a span of intensive psychotherapy before irreversibly harming their own bodies. I think doctors should also be reprimanded for doing Mengele experiments on children.
However, trying to manipulate the intentions of someone who’s been doing this form of cross-dressing performances for the last 3 decades (or more) as a tongue-in-cheek costume to fit my personal biases? What kind of clown world are we living in? and why can’t we just appropriately identify the actual issues and call them by name. That’s part of our problem on “the right”, we sometimes have no idea what we are looking at and are so easily gaslit by the left.
Draw your lines and call them out.
